The latest England squad for Saturdays international brought the usual frustrations for Bolton Supporters. The two wanderers whose form deserved inclusion had, initially, missed out. Gary Cahill was included as a replacement when Joleon Lescott was injured when, on form alone, he is streets ahead of the underperforming £22 Million city defender.
The biggest disappointment is the snub to Kevin Davies whose performances and form over the last two seasons should have gained him inclusion in the squad, if not the team. Emile Heskey is effective in the role Capello has him playing for England but Davies does it better and scores goals.
But perhaps the snub is a blessing in disguise. And I don't just mean when the big money comes in for proven international players and the board decides they have to cash in. What I mean is when Micheal Ricketts had his one ill starred cap and he came back a very different person. Showing a real lack of maturity and judgement, he listened to poor advice at the Engalnd training camp and considered he was better than the club. His attitude stank from then on and his move to "bigger" clubs like Middlesborough started his steep decline into the lower divisions and no doubt non league.
Now I don't think Kevin Davies is so shallow as to have his head turned but Gary Cahill is just on the cusp of a deserved international cap and perhaps the pressure of "advice" may well lead him to consider his future at Bolton. I hope not for both he and Kevin Davies have proved to be bright lights in Boltons indifferent start to this season.
However, putting country before club for once if Capello is honest in saying he will pick players on form not on reputation then both should be in this squad, if not the starting eleven.
