No! Owen Coyle Isn't A Horrible Mistake!

Quite frankly, I am baffled by the small, but noisy, minority of Bolton fans who are already questioning Owen Coyle.

I've read a few opinions over the last week or so on different forums, that seem to suggest, that people are already starting to doubt the managerial ability of Owen Coyle- this both baffles and worries me.

Fan power can be a dangerous thing. By the end of Gary Megson's reign, I think nearly every Bolton fan was in agreement, he had to go, however, the after effects of the way the Bolton fans treated Gary Megson could be damaging to the club.

A minority of Bolton fans seem to have let booing players, managers and questioning decisions made on the pitch, etc. become a natural reaction- this worries me.

Whilst I cannot claim to be against booing as I do think it can serve a purpose, it should be a LAST resort and should not be heard as often as I hear it at the Reebok.

The reasons for getting rid of Gary Megson, I presumed anyway, were not just down to results and a lack of football, but down to the lack of rapport he had with the fans, and by the end of his reign, the players. Too his apparent blantant lack of respect for this football club.

Up steps Owen Coyle, a man who speaks so proudly of the club and has a strong bond with the club and its fans. He seems to be the polar opposite of Gary Megson in every way.

Not to mince words, quite frankly, I believe some of our fans need a major reality check. We are no longer a top ten team. We are a team currently sat 18th in the league, and probably good value for that position.

I fully take the point that after nearly ten years in the Premier League, we shouldn't be scrapping for survival, but that just isn't the way the Premier League works. Look at Leeds and Charlton just like us they  can claim, 'we were a top ten team not long ago', football changes quickly. Right now we are very much a bottom ten team and we are a team who could be in the Coca-Cola Championship if everyone, players, staff, fans, don't start pulling in the same direction very quickly.

We have not got a god given right to beat anyone, certainly not away from home as a few fans seemed to think after the Wigan game.

I'm really speaking to the minority here, because I think most Bolton fans realise the situation we are in, realise what Owen Coyle can do for this club in the long-term, and are fully behind him and the players.

Owen Coyle is currently working with Gary Megson's squad, plus a couple of talented but inexperienced loanees. The results are not going to change over night. We've had a tough run of fixtures, and a couple of untimely injuries.

It may take as long as two years before Owen Coyle has his own squad fully assembled and has them playing as he wants them to play.

Even then we will probably be in the bottom half of the Premier League, when ten teams in the league can spend 50M a transfer window, and you can spend 10M, it takes a massive effort, and that bit of luck, to get up there.

I do think Owen Coyle has shown in his managerial career so far that he can create that unity and squad belief that Allardyce created and had Bolton Wanderers performing well above its stations for four excellent years.

I think we have already shown signs of improvement since Coyle took over;

  • Zat Knight and Fabrice Muamba look like different players- from the team who haven't kept a clean sheet all season. We now look composed at the back.
  • Sam Ricketts is proving valuable, he may not be a world beater in any position, but his ability to play right back, left back and centre back all to a decent Premier League standard could be priceless with our injuries.
  • Kevin Davies had his best game of the season against Tottenham, if Coyle can get more performances of that level out of Kev then survival will be alot easier.
  • He has already identifie, in my opinion, the two weak-links in Gary Megons's side, and is easing them out. One has been subbed in every league game and even dropped completly for one. The other has been dropped for the last two games.

We've lost our best player, and our two leading goalscorers, Gary Cahill and Ivan Klasnic, to injuries. Of course goals will be harder to come by.

What we need now is a huge team effort, from the players AND the fans, pulling in the same direction on to the end of the season. Owen Coyle is a good manager, should we stay up he'll pick out the weak links, he'll mould the squad his own way.

And even if Owen Coyle is "too inexperienced" or "out of his depth", right now, my answer is, 'so what?' He is the man we have, he isn't going anywhere. I don't see what good it's going to do moaning about him, getting behind him and supporting him is the only way to go.

Come on, pull together. Lets prove them all wrong, all over again. We're the one and only Wanderers!!!
